Day 3: Waiting out the storm

When we woke up on the 5th (Day 3 of the trip), Joplin was under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, and the section of Kansas that we would shortly be going through was under a flash flood warning, so... we waited around without going anywhere.  You may have noticed that we each wrote one of these entries at that time.

Well, once the storm passed we were on our way.  Day 3 was the day of Gwen driving.  She started the day behind the wheel in the remaining rain in Missouri.  She got us to the border of Kansas, and drove that state's entire length of the mother road.  She continued on through Quapaw, Oklahoma.  So, she drove in 3 states in one day!

Although Kansas only has 13.6 miles of Route 66 in it, there are some really cool things there.

First stop was Galen, KS, where we saw the tow truck that inspired the character of 'Mater in the movie "Cars".  Our version of 'Mater got a photo with the original.

Up next was a general store about 5 miles away.  It was full of nostalgia items.  It was also the place where we got a set of turn-by-turn maps of the route.  We've been using those ever since.  Sometimes the directions are a little confusing, but that seems to be the way Route 66 works.

Up next was the Rainbow Arch Marsh Bridge.  It's the last of its type on Route 66.  There are a lot of unique bridges on the road.

Shortly thereafter was the Kansas border.  I refrained from quoting Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz" as we left the state.  I'm very proud of myself.

Gwen pulled over in Quapaw (pronounced O-Gaw-Pah), where we proceeded to have lunch.  I imagine that will be the next entry.
