Driving Out of the Metro

Thanks to traffic, the first lengthy driving leg of the trip was still within the city limits of Chicago (and nearby Cicero & Berwyn).  The route is more clearly marked than I'd noticed over the last few years of living in Chicago.  It turns out that I've been on Route 66 quite a few times and not known it.  Gwen was able to snap photos while I was at the wheel.  Getting us out of the metro was my task.  Thanks to an awkward detour, we saw a bit more of suburban Chicagoland than we meant to.  But, then were well on our way.

Luckily for us (especially later on during the drive) the path was clearly marked by brown "Historic Route 66" signs.  Not surprisingly, most of the towns along the way also had a good deal of signage referring to the road.  That being said, the brown signs get you where you're going.  The others are less helpful directionally.  In fact, one can apparently slap Route 66 on to just about anything from a diner, to a service station, to a storage unit.  If it's along the way, it can have "66" in its name.
